The Sea and Cake - Monday
“Monday” is the final track from The Sea and Cake’s 2011 The Moonlight Butterfly EP, and it’s a typically relaxed and enjoyable tune from a band that has been a consistent favorite of mine since 2003. You can allow their music to glide by you, it’s pleasant enough for that. Dig a little deeper though and you’ll find a band that’s making unique, beautiful melodies that reward close and repeated listens.

When reviewing the band’s 2008 album Car Alarm for Pitchfork, writer Jason Crock essentially put into words exactly how I, and I’m sure a lot of other fans, feel about The Sea and Cake:
“The Sea and Cake are the definition of consistent and singular: They don’t sound like anyone else, they’re too smart and careful to make a truly bad record, and they’re comfortable with existing range of possibilities of the project. So a new Sea and Cake album means you know what you are getting…The sound throughout— as ever recorded and mixed by drummer John McEntire— is gorgeous, and a nice reminder of how thoughtful simplicity can still carry a lot of weight.”
